If you're running a text marketing campaign you'll know that you need to be aware of Data Protection but understanding the regulations can be a bit daunting.  We've compiled some basic tips to help you stay data protection compliant.

  1. Remember to always ask for permission from your subscribers for you to contact them.
  2. Always include a way for your customers to opt out of your marketing messages.
  3. Never send messages that your customer did not sign up for  - if your customer signed up to receive offers from Mary's Beauty don't be tempted to send them marketing messages from John's Tool Hire.
  4. Keep your contact list up to date - you can't send messages to someone if you haven't been in contact with them for over 12 months and given them the chance to opt out of your list. Not that we'd recommend being in contact so rarely - you don't want your customers to forget you!
  5. Text message signup is the perfect way to ensure that you always have a record of your customers opt-in to your marketing list.  Your customer can join your marketing list by simply sending a text message and they can easily opt-out by sending STOP.

Remember: When in doubt, try applying a bit of common sense and think about it from your customers point of view and always treat their contact details with respect.
